How to Cure Depression Naturally - Step Three, Finding The Cause

If you want to know how to cure depression naturally then one of the best ways is to try to remember when you first became depressed. The word depression is far too vague and covers a multitude of causes.

Let me give you an example. When someone receives a sudden and life threatening shock they may never fully recover. The result of the shock - intense fear - is meant to release adrenalin so you can escape from the dangerous situation rapidly. The action of fleeing tends to be curative.

It’s when the shock comes and you can’t do anything, that the long term effects become apparent. Let me give you an example. A soldier witnesses his best friend blown to pieces beside him, in combat. He must remain in the situation and continue his job. He suffers shock, loss and grief, but can’t deal with it.

Later, he suffers panic attacks and insomnia. These continue unabated. He is diagnosed with depression and put on anti-depressants. This makes no difference.

Finally he consults with a professional homeopath, who gives him the homeopathic medicine Aconite in a high potency (strength). Immediately he sees an improvement. The first night he sleeps like a baby. Over the next week, his panic attacks lessen in intensity by about half. The following week, they are almost gone.

Aconite deals very effectively with the suddenness of an attack. Earthquake victims, who had no warning and were suddenly trapped, are likely to need Aconite to resolve the shock.

Sudden attacks of violence or a sudden accident can bring the same results.

Grief is another emotion that is often grouped under the title of depression. The loss of a loved one can have a profound and lasting effect on some. You can’t do anything about the loss, there’s no escape. If you can’t grieve, then you can get stuck. By allowing the natural expression of grief, you are letting it go. By holding it in, you are holding on to it.

The homeopathic medicine Ignatia has helped many free themselves of grief.

A feeling of isolation or abandonment, can also make some feel desolate and depressed. This may start with a mother giving her baby up for adoption. The baby never fully recovers from this abandonment and similar situations keep repeating themselves throughout their lives.

The homeopathic medicine Pulsatilla can help some people through this feeling.

So in learning how to cure depression, you need to know what your unique cause for the depression was. This is often too complicated and painful to manage on your own. In which case a professional homeopath can help you.

How to Cure Depression Naturally - Step Two, Re-Locate Your Focus

Learning how to cure depression naturally means that you need to recognise that the way you live has not served you well. That some changes need to be made.

Learning to change your thoughts (detailed in step one) is one of the most difficult things to do, but one that has the most potential for profound change. By difficult, I mean it will take time and effort to put it into place firmly. So be patient.

Depression is rather like a black hole. It has the power to suck you in. And the sides of the hole are slippery so it’s hard to climb out. However, if you learn to shift your thoughts away from your depression, you’ll find that somehow, you fly out of the hole.

Shifting the focus of your thoughts may be difficult at first, so again effort, determination and time are needed. Initially, I suggest that you search around in your mind for the happy times in your life. Where were you happy? What location were you in? Was it in a park, on a beach, on a camping holiday?

It will probably be somewhere natural. Once you recognise those times, then you may like to visit a similar location that’s near to where you live. Then look around you and try to observe the subtle details of life - the swaying of the trees, the birds singing, insects searching for food.

Put your judgements on hold. Just observe the life around you.

This may only be momentary the first time. But the shift away from you is what you are trying to achieve. Looking at other life forms and how they cope with life is a good way to do this.

Then, you can shift your thoughts back to this, any time during the day. If you can manage this three times in the first day, you’re doing well. Try to increase this every day.

If you can’t remember any times in your life that you were happy, then think of situations that give you a glimmer of happiness, of hope, now. What are their locations? By going to similar locations, you are automatically re-focussing your thoughts away from you.

Shifting your thoughts away from your problems tends to lighten you. In the first days, even weeks, you will probably not manage this very often, but slowly, slowly you are making profound and lasting changes. In these days, it will feel as if you’re not making any progress.

However, as the days roll into weeks, you will start to see a change.

Not everyone around you will like the change. People often prefer the familiar, even when it’s negative. So don’t expect everyone to enjoy your new found freedom from depression.

How to Cure Depression Naturally - Step One, Change Your Thoughts

If you are seeking how to cure depression naturally, or any other way, then you probably need to start by changing your thoughts. In a way, this is the most difficult thing to do, so once you can do this, then the rest is almost easy.

Your thoughts will keep you firmly in your present state, so this is the most important aspect that needs changing. All you need to do is to be aware of your thoughts and change them from negative to positive.

For example, if your thoughts are “I’ll never be rid of this depression, my father and aunt were depressed, too. It’s in my genes.” A subtle change which would have a big impact could be “Depression may be in my genes, but I have the power to change it”.

Write what is meaningful to you. Just ensure the words you use are positive, rather than re-enforcing what you already do. Honour your attachment to negative if you have to, but do it in a positive way. Such as “depression may be in my genes, but I have the power to change it:

At this stage, it doesn’t really matter if you believe whether you have the power to change or not. As long as you believe that change is possible, that’s enough. Recognising that others have succeeded in changing gives you the potential to believe it can happen for you.

Although some people think this is a brain washing activity, you are already brain washing yourself with your negative thoughts. It’s far better to brain wash yourself with positive thoughts. Thoughts have a profound effect on you. They dictate who you and what you do. You have the choice to keep the old ones which don’t serve you, or to change them to new ones which will serve you better.

Create thoughts that will work for you.

Write down the new words and keep it with you, perhaps as a note in your pocket. Every time you become conscious of your negative thoughts, refer to your note. This will be an effort in the first few days, so you need to keep the note somewhere you will regularly see it.

It’s also best to keep your note and your thoughts away from others. The last thing you need at this stage is to be mocked by those insensitive to your needs.

If you can achieve this three times in the first day, you’re doing well. Each day, this will increase.

After a few days, changing your thoughts will become second natural. Keep at it. Don’t give up.

Keep the note, be aware of your thoughts and change them.
